sample of evening prayer

Preparation

O God, make speed to save us.
All: O Lord, make haste to help us.
Send your Holy Spirit upon us,
All: and clothe us with power from on high. Alleluia.

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation,
to you be glory and praise for ever.
Raised to your right hand on high
the ascended Christ shows the prints of love
and bestows on us the gifts of grace.
As your Spirit renews the face of the earth,
may we bring forth the fruit of the Spirit
and reveal your glory in all the world.
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
All: Blessed be God for ever.

That this evening may be holy,
good and peaceful,
let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence is kept.

As our evening prayer rises before you, O God,
so may your mercy come down upon us
to cleanse our hearts
and set us free to sing your praise
now and for ever.
All: Amen.

The Word of God

Psalmody

Psalm 67
1 God be gracious to us and bless us
and make his face to shine upon us,
2 That your way may be known upon earth,
your saving power among all nations.
3 Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you.
4 O let the nations rejoice and be glad,
for you will judge the peoples righteously and govern the nations upon earth.
5 Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you.
6 Then shall the earth bring forth her increase,
and God, our own God, will bless us.
7 God will bless us,
and all the ends of the earth shall fear him.

Response to Psalm 67
In the face of Jesus Christ
your light and glory have blazed forth,
O God of all the nations;
with all your people,
may we make known your grace
and walk in the ways of peace;
for your name’s sake.

Psalm 133
with the refrain: Mercy and truth are met together, righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

1 Behold how good and pleasant it is
to dwell together in unity.
2 It is like the precious oil upon the head,
running down upon the beard,
3 Even on Aaron’s beard,
running down upon the collar of his clothing.
4 It is like the dew of Hermon
running down upon the hills of Zion.
5 For there the Lord has promised his blessing:
even life for evermore.

Refrain: Mercy
and truth are met together,
righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

Prayer after Psalm 133
Grant to your people, good Lord,
the spirit of unity,
that they may dwell together in your love,
and so bear to the world
the ointment of your healing and the
dew of your blessing;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Response to the Psalms
All: Glory to the Father and
to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Joel 2.21-32

21 Do not fear, O soil;
be glad and rejoice,
for the Lord has done great things!
22 Do not fear, you animals of the field,
for the pastures of the wilderness are green;
the tree bears its fruit,
the fig tree and vine give their full yield.

23 O children of Zion, be glad
and rejoice in the Lord your God;
for he has given the early rain for your vindication,
he has poured down for you abundant rain,
the early and the later rain, as before.
24 The threshing floors shall be full of grain,
the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.

25 I will repay you for the years
that the swarming locust has eaten,
the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter,
my great army, which I sent against you.

26 You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied,
and praise the name of the Lord your God,
who has dealt wondrously with you.
And my people shall never again be put to shame.
27 You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel,
and that I, the Lord, am your God and there is no other.
And my people shall never again be put to shame.

God’s Spirit Poured Out
28 Then afterward
I will pour out my spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your old men shall dream dreams,
and your young men shall see visions.
29 Even on the male and female slaves,
in those days, I will pour out my spirit.

30 I will show portents in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes. 32 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.

Canticle

A Song of God’s Children Romans 8.2, 14, 15b-19

1 The law of the Spirit
of life in Christ Jesus
has set us free from the law of sin and death.
2 All who are led by the
Spirit of God are children of God;
for we have received the Spirit that enables us to cry, ‘Abba, Father’.
3 The Spirit himself bears
witness that we are children of God
and if God’s children, then heirs of God;
4 If heirs of God, then
fellow-heirs with Christ;
since we suffer with him now, that we may be glorified with him.
5 These sufferings that
we now endure
are not worth comparing to the glory that shall be revealed.
6 For the creation waits
with eager longing
for the revealing of the children of God.

Response to the Canticle
All: Glory to the Father and
to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

The Spirit of the Father,
who raised Christ Jesus from the dead,
gives life to the people of God. Alleluia.

Gospel Canticle

The Magnificat (The Song of Mary) from Luke 1.46-55

1 My soul proclaims the
greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour;
he has looked with favour on his lowly servant.
2 From this day all generations
will call me blessed;
the Almighty has done great things for me
and holy is his name.
3 He has mercy on those
who fear him,
from generation to generation.
4 He has shown strength
with his arm
and has scattered the proud in their conceit,
5 Casting down the mighty
from their thrones
and lifting up the lowly.
6 He has filled the hungry
with good things
and sent the rich away empty.
7 He has come to the aid
of his servant Israel,
to remember his promise of mercy,
8 The promise made to our
ancestors,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Response to the Gospel Canticle
All: Glory to the Father and
to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.
How excellent is your name
in all the world,
you have set your glory above the heavens. Alleluia.

Prayers

Thanksgiving may be made for the day. Intercessions are offered for peace for individuals and their needs, for those who wait on God, that they may find
renewal, for all who are struggling with broken relationships

In response to each prayer offered aloud:
Lord, in your mercy
All: hear our prayer

Silence may be kept.

The Collect

God, who as at this time
taught the hearts of your faithful people
by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit:
grant us by the same Spirit
to have a right judgement in all things
and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort;
through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
All: Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Being made one by the power of the Spirit,
as our Saviour taught us, so we pray

All: Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

The Conclusion

May the Spirit kindle in us the fire of God’s love.
All: Amen.
Let us bless the Lord. Alleluia, alleluia.
All: Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia.
